Does Your Pet Have Bad Breath?

dental for email 2 Does your pet have bad breath? Bad breath is one of the first signs of dental disease in your pet. Eighty percent of pets over the age of three years old have dental disease! Infected teeth and gums, overloaded with bacteria, can cause pets to loose teeth, get bone infections as well as have more serious heart, liver, intestinal and joint issues.
At your pet's annual exam your veterinarian will examine your pet's teeth and may recommend professional veterinary dental cleaning. Some pets may be started on an antibiotic prior to cleaning to minimize gum swelling and tissue inflammation and reduce the risk of infection. At the dental cleaning appointment, following pre anesthetic blood work (recommended), your pet will be placed under anesthesia and monitored throughout the procedure. Professional veterinary staff will examine your pet's mouth in detail, checking for loose or damaged teeth and any growths or other abnormalities. Damaged or diseased teeth will be extracted. The teeth will be cleaned with a hand held ultrasonic scaler to remove all calculus above and below the gum line. Then the teeth will be polished to smooth the tooth again, as tartar and calculus pit the tooth. Application of an anti plaque barrier such as ORAVET will be recommended. Your veterinarian may show you before and after pictures of your pets's teeth and will send you home with information on home dental care for your pet that will help to reduce plaque and tartar buildup between cleanings.
Your pet will be much healthier if oral health care is managed at home along with annual professional veterinary dental cleaning. Proper dental care can add years to your pet's life!! February is pet dental month-mention this newsletter article when you schedule a dental cleaning and receive 10% off dental services!

 Good Homes Needed

AISCHA If you are considering adding a pet to your family please consider a rescue or pound pet. With the current poor economy, many more people are having to find new homes for their beloved pets. I have had many clients contact me recently about finding a home for both cats and dogs. One in particular, I would love to assist in finding a good home. Aischa is a beautiful almost 7 year old female German Shepherd. The owner's son has become very allergic to her. She is current on all vaccinations and health care but does have some mild allergies which are controlled with daily medications. She is a very nice dog. Please call me if you would like some more information on this pet or are looking for another pet. You should also consider Kalamazoo Animal Services and Kalamazoo Animal Rescue to add a wonderful pet to your family and save a life!
