 New Baby and The Pets

baby and dog Congratulations! A new baby is arriving! If your pets are going to take a step down the pecking order ladder, training needs to be done well in advance of the arrival of baby. First, make sure your pet is healthy and up to date with worming and vaccinations. Your pets, especially dogs, need to have a basic understanding of good behavior. Review basic obedience commands with your pet. Get your pet used to being ignored or left alone for short periods of time each day. If you will exclude your pet from certain areas of your home after the baby arrives, set rules well in advance of baby's arrival. Let the pets investigate new items of furniture, the baby room, if allowed, and smell the baby cream and powder. While the baby is still at the hospital, have someone introduce an article of baby clothing to the pets. Play a tape of baby noises so pets can be socialized to the sounds. Teach pets the difference between pet toys and baby toys. Set aside time each day for someone to walk and play with the pets. Reward your pet with a treat and praise for good behavior around the baby. For safety, never leave children unattended with a pet.

 Did You Know?

cat in cage Did you know that great pets await adoption at the Kalamazoo Animal Rescue and Kalamazoo Animal Services? If you are considering a pet adoption in 2009, visit the Kalamazoo Animal Rescue or Kalamazoo Animal Services. Staff members can assist you with your search. Remember if planning a pet as a gift for someone, always talk to them first to make sure they want a pet and have them help pick out their ideal pet.

 Quick and Easy Dog Treats
 tasty!

For a quick and easy dog treat, try freezing low soduim chicken or beef broth in ice cube trays. Another idea is to freeze canned pumpkin in a rubber Kong toy-lots of fiber and will keep a dog busy for hours! For a simple low calorie treat, break a plain rice cake into 8-10 pieces and give a pice of rice cake as a treat.
