Welcome to February! This months newsletter will
include an article
about Leptospirosis, a Dental Cleaning Promotion,
fun facts, and the monthly trivia
question. Remember we love input on the
newsletter so any recommendations or suggestions
of article topics are very welcome! I hope you are
enjoying the newsletter and I thank you for your time.
Continuing Education continues to be invaluable to
me so that I can stay current on the latest and best
ways to treat my patients. I just returned from the
Michigan Veterinary Conference and attended many
presentations on respiratory disease, MSU advances
in Emergency and ICU care, urinary incontinance in
dogs, chronic renal failure in cats and interstitial
cystitis in cats (a huge reason for inappropriate
urination in the home). There will be some upcoming
informational articles via the website or our newsletter
on these topics!
At the MVC i also purchased some new
equipment for
your veterinary clinic! We will be receiving an IV
pump
which will assist patients who are hospitalized and in
need of IV fluids. I also hope to purchase a doppler
blood pressure monitor and an endoscope when
finances allow. Remember, the money you spend
with us helps improve the level of care I can provide
for your beloved pet!

Leptospirosis
A Deadly Threat To Dogs In Your Neighborhood!
Leptospirosis is a deadly bacteria spread by
wildlife including raccoons, skunks, opossums,
squirrels, and rats. Other infected dogs also spread
leptospirosis. The Centers for Disease Control
estimate leptospirosis infection rate in wildlife as high
as 30 to 40 percent. The bacteria is shed in urine and
dogs become infected after contact with urine from an
infected animal. Common dog behaviors of licking,
sniffing, eating grass, and drinking standing water can
be enough to expose your dog to a leptospirosis
infection. Symptoms can range from no symptoms to
severe symptoms including:
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- fever
- depression
- sore muscles, shivering
- difficulty breathing, coughing
- dehydration
Quick treatment is required to prevent renal failure.
Leptospirosis is the #1 cause of acute renal failure in
dogs!
The scary thing is that people can also be infected
with leptospirosis thru contact with their pets urine!
Please have your dogs vaccinated for leptospirosis
annually to decrease the chance of infection with this
deadly disease. Don't worry, all dogs over the age of
12 weeks who are vaccinated by Dr. Rotigel do receive
this vaccination with their regular vaccines.
