 Pet Obesity
Can You Feel Your Pet's Ribs?

fat cat photo Did you know that 40-50% of pets are overweight? Humans are the main cause of obesity in pets! Extra pounds of weight on your pet places extra demand on all body organs. Overweight pets are at greater risk for:
  • Diabetes and decreased immune function
  • Damage to joints, bones, and ligaments
  • Heart disease
  • Respiratory problems
  • Exercise intolerance
  • Heat intolerance
  • Increased anesthetic and surgical risk
  • Digestive problems
  • Skin and hair coat, and dental problems
  • Increased risk of cancer
Work with your veterinarian to set up a healthy weight goal for your pet. Your veterinarian will examine your pet and may recommend blood work and/or a urinalysis to rule out existing disease or a thyroid issue. Your vet will discuss the best type of food and treats to feed and portion control. Exercise recommendation will be made. Your vet will recommend a gradual weight loss program for your pet with weight checks at 3-4 week intervals.
As your pet's caregiver you have complete control over what, how much, and how often your pet eats. Next month we will have a follow up article on treat alternatives for pets.

 Did You Know?

  • Dog memories last no longer than 5 minutes.
  • Cat memories last up to 16 hours.
  • A goldfish has a memory span of 3 seconds.
