 Safe Travel with Pets

traveling dog in car The summer months are very popular for family travel. Pets now travel more frequently with their owners due to the many pet friendly destinations around the country. Please make it a priority to keep pet health records current and arrange accommodations for your pet well in advance of travel.
Before traveling with a pet really consider if your pet would enjoy traveling. If it is easily stressed by changes or gets car sick it might be better to consider a pet sitter or boarding facility for your pet. If your pet enjoys travel, consider the following:
  • Make sure your pet's collar has identifications tags, a license and proof of rabies vaccination. Your home phone number should be on the tag as well as a temporary tag for your travel destination address and phone.
  • Consider a permanent microchip identification for all pets. Microchips can increase the chance of having your pet returned to you if it gets lost far from home. (If your pet is not yet microchipped, mention this article when you make an appointment and get $5 off the microchip implant fee this month.)
  • Pack your pet's health records, any medications your pet needs as well as your veterinarian's phone number. Also pack a recent picture of your pet in case it gets lost.
  • Pack pet food, water from home, toys and treats.
  • Use a crate or seatbelt harness for pets in the car.
  • Each airline has their own rules regarding pet travel. Contact them well in advance of travel to find out their policies.
  • Trains and bus lines do not allow pets except for Service Dogs.
  • Some cruise lines do allow pets. Contact them well in advance of travel for their policies.
  • If you are staying in a hotel or motel, check their pet policy before booking your stay.
  • Do not leave your pet unattended while traveling!! A pet left in a car with the air conditioning running could stall. A pet left in a hotel room could escape, disturb other guests, or destroy property in a strange place.
If travel with you pet is in your summer plans this year there are many web sites devoted to travel with pets. Check out www.petswelcome.com and www.doggonefun.com. We wish you fun and safe travels!

 Did You Know?

white cat
  • A large majority of white cats with blue eyes are deaf. White cats with only one blue eye are deaf in the ear closest to the blue eye.
  • Cats with white fur and skin on their ears are very prone to sunburn. Frequent sunburn can lead to skin cancer. Another reason to keep your cat indoors.
  • 67,000 puppies can result from an un-spayed female dog and her mate in six years if none are spayed or neutered.

 Trivia

The trivia question for July is: In the T.S. Eliot book "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats", what is the name of the "cat about town"?
Answer to the June question: In the 1966 movie "The Ugly Dachshund", what breed of dog is the ugly Dachshund? Answer: Great Dane. Congratulations to Monique L for the first correct answer. Her Visiting Vet account has been credited $5.

 NEIGHBORHOOD VET VISITS!

Have you been considering a house call but are concerned about the "travel fee"? Is it difficult to transport your pets to the vet? Do you live in a neighborhood with other pet owners? We are now offering neighborhood visits with no travel fee! If you are within 10 miles of Discount Pet on Gull Road (or possibly one of our our other sites) and at least 4 families would like to have a scheduled neighborhood visit, no one would have to pay a travel fee! We have been offering this service to Skyrise Apartments, Westland Meadows and other assisted living facilities for years and are now offering it to all clients! For more information just give us a call. Sevices would include routine examinations, vaccinations, heartworm and fecal checks and possibly even surgery (surgery or dentals).

Thank you for your time and I wish you a fantastic month. We constantly strive to provide the best care for your family pets and exceptional service to our clients. I offer appointments while parked locally at Discount Pet Store on Gull Road and also offer house calls as available. If I can be of service to you, please give us a call at 269-731-7387 to schedule an appointment today. Also, remember if you refer a friend or family member to our clinic, both of you will be entered in our 2007 referral drawing program for many great prizes. Our next drawing is December 2007. Congratulations to Dorothy H, Sherry L, and Sara D who are our June 2007 prize winners! A big thank you to all of our prize donors: Precious Pets, Shampooches, and Bone Appetite Bakery. Please see our website for more information about our prize drawing. Thank you and Good Luck!! Our previous newsletters can be found on our web page.
