 HEARTWORM DISEASE
 how does it occur?

mosquito Ok, you have heard the term heartworm disease and you probably give your pet heartworm preventatives, but what is it and how could your pet get this deadly disease? Heartworm disease affects both dogs and cats and is transmitted by a mosquito bite. If the mosquito had bitten a pet with heartworm disease then bites your pet the parasite is transmitted thru this bite and adult worms end up in the heart. Signs of heartworm disease include no signs at all, cough, lethargy, difficult breathing, exercise intolerance, weight loss and death. The severity and onset of clinical signs are related to the number of worms present, the duration of infection and the animals response to the infection. Most cats show no signs, possibly some vomiting and sudden death. Most dogs are tested on a yearly basis with a quick in house blood test. Some of these tests check for heartworm infection and others test for heartworm, ehrlichia and lyme disease. Many dogs and cats are given heartworm preventative monthly year round or at least May 1st thru December 1st. The nice thing about heartworm preventatives is that most also protect for other things such as intestinal parasites and fleas. We recommend year round Interceptor or Sentinel for dogs and Revolution for cats. Both of these products are given once a month. If you have any questions please give us a call.
