 Canine and Feline Arthritis

old dog Arthritis is a complex condition involving inflammation of joints. Arthritis affects 1 in 5 dogs in the United States and also affects many cats. It is one the the most common sources of chronic pain that veterinarians treat.
Many types of arthritis exist and can be caused by genetics, joint overuse, injury, and wear and tear related to aging. One common type of arthritis is Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease(DJD). DJD in dogs can be due to hip dysplasia or cranial cruciate ligament rupture. In cats DJD can result from a hit by car injury, or a bite wound or other joint stress.
Signs of arthritis in pet include the following:
  • Pain
  • Favoring a limb or side of the body
  • Difficulty sitting or getting up
  • Reluctance to walk
  • Decreased activity
  • Attitude or behavior changes

If you notice any of these signs in your pet consult your veterinarian. An arthritis evaluation involves a physical exam and possible x-rays.
A treatment plan for arthritis may includes weight control, steroidal and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and food or supplements with omega fatty acid, Glucosamine and Chondroitin. There are many products available but only a few work well in our pets.
Please work with your veterinarian to find the best treatment for your pet. Never give human medication to you pet without checking with the veterinarian first. Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen can be toxic to pets.
