 Cold Weather Care For Pets

winter dog Some pets, especially certain northern dog breeds, love cold weather but other dogs and most cats are happy to be inside and warm during the winter!

The following are care concerns for pets in the winter months:
  • The best place for your dog in the winter is inside except when taken out for exercise. If your dog must stay outside, provide a dry doghouse with a raised floor. The house should be big enough for the dog to sit and lie down but not too large or they will not be able to stay warm with body heat. The house should face away from the wind, be draft free, and the floor covered with cedar shavings or dry straw. The doorway can be covered with heavy plastic. Please also make sure your outside pet has fresh water at all times.
  • Deep snow can be fun to play in but if it gets too deep near your fence your pets can walk right out of the yard!
  • Snow and ice dams on the roof can be of danger to people and pets. On a sunny day shifting ice and snow can fall and kill a pet or a person.

  • Snow melt products can be irritating to your pets paws and also the mouth if licked or ingested. Wipe paws with a towel when pets have been exposed to slush and snow melt.
  • Cats can be attracted to warm engines in parked cars. To avoid injury to a hidden animal bang on you car hood or honk your horn to scare them away before starting your engine.

  • Remember to store antifreeze and all household chemicals out of the reach pets. Antifreeze ingestion can be fatal without immediate veterinary care!

  • Pets can easily fall through the ice on a pond or a lake and it can be difficult for them to get out. If you live near a pond or a lake use caution about letting pets play on the ice.

If at all possible keep pets inside with you and your family during the winter. Have fun outside too but remember if it is too cold for you it is too cold for your pets!

 Did You Know?

mouse
  • The average canned or dry cat meal is the nutritional equivalent of 5 mice.
  • The reason for the lack of mouse-flavored cat food is due to the fact that cats will not eat it!
  • A cat can be either right-pawed or left- pawed.
