Zoonotic Parasites From Pets and Wildlife
Zoonotic diseases are passed from animals to humans
and visa versa. Children, the immune compromised, and the elderly
are most susceptible to zoonotic infections. Dogs, cats and
raccoons commonly infected with parasites have become a huge public
health issue as our environment is increasingly shared with
infected animals. Raccoon roundworm infection is particularly
dangerous and has actually killed children. Roundworms infect
humans through accidental ingestion of eggs from contaminated soil,
sand, toys, food, and feces. Hookworms usually penetrate through
skin but can also cause disease through ingestion. Infected animals
may shed millions of eggs in their feces, rapidly contaminating the
environment such as your backyard, garden, sandbox, or the beach
you visit. Some signs of human infection in children are fever,
abdominal pain, anorexia, nausea, ocular (eye) disease and
blindness. Most cases of human infection are preventible by
following some simple recommendations. There is no need to get rid
of your pets and stay indoors! 1. Keep your pets on monthly
year-round parasite control. Products such as Interceptor, Sentinel
and Revolution will de-worm monthly for roundworm and hookworm. 2.
Use a pooper scooper and pick up pet stools from the yard. 3. Teach
children to keep away from fecal matter. 4. Learn to recognize
raccoon feces (see www.bear- tracker.com). If found, remove feces and pour boiling
water over the area it was found. 5. Cover sandboxes when not in
use. 6. Wash hands after contact with animal feces. Teach children
not to put things, including fingers, in their mouth and to wash
hands after playing on playgrounds or in sandboxes. 7. Do not keep
wild animals such as raccoons as pets. Yes, they can be very cute
but they can also be deadly. 8. If you have concerns about risk to
your family or pets talk to your pediatrician or the Visiting Vet.
Remember that most cases of human infection with roundworms and
hookworms are preventable. Have a fun safe summer with your pets
and your family!
