Dental Disease
March is Veterinary Dental Month! Dental disease is the
most common disease seen by veterinarians. Most cats and dogs over
the age of 3 have some degree of dental disease. You may have
noticed bad breath, red and swollen gums, weight loss or nothing at
all. All pets should get a thorough dental exam at least once a
year. If dental disease is caught in the early stages it can be
reversed with a thorough dental cleaning. Dental disease when
untreated will lead to severe periodontal disease, pain and tooth
loss not to mention possible heart and kidney disease. A dental
cleaning involves a physical exam, possible pre-anesthetic blood
work, anesthesia, high speed ultrasonic scaling of all tooth
surfaces and a fluoride treatment. Some involve extrations,
antibiotics and pain medication. Humans brush their teeth 2-3 times
a day and see their dentist twice a year for a cleaning. Pet dental
home care can be done by daily brushing with a pet toothpaste,
daily oral rinses or a weekly application of Oravet, a newer
plaque prevention sealant. A more in depth dental article may be
found on our website. Take a look at your pets teeth today and if
you have any questions, please give us a call.
